Understanding care options
Private Home Care vs Ontario Health atHome: What's the Difference?
The main differences are who assesses and arranges the care, how the service is funded, and what is included in the individual plan. Neither a public assessment nor a private enquiry confirms that every task or requested hour can be covered.

Ontario Health atHome starts with assessment
Ontario Health atHome says Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card can receive an assessment to determine eligibility for services. Additional requirements depend on the programme. A care coordinator discusses the person's needs and helps determine the plan; an OHIP card alone does not establish a particular amount of care. See its Getting Started guide.
Its home care overview describes services including nursing, personal support, therapies, and care coordination, based on assessed needs. You, a family member, or another person involved can make a referral. Ask the coordinator what has been approved, when arrangements will be confirmed, and whom to contact if the person's needs change.
Private support starts with an agreement and quote
With privately paid support, you approach a provider and discuss the tasks, preferred schedule, available workers, and price. Read the proposal and booking terms before confirming. Paying privately does not itself establish caregiver qualifications, immediate availability, clinical capability, or a guarantee of the same person at every visit.
Vicaria Care's offer is non-clinical: companionship, personal support, respite, meals and light home help, everyday mobility support, reminders, accompaniment, and practical hospital-to-home help. It does not provide nursing, wound care, or medication administration. Another private provider may have a different scope; compare actual services, not the phrase “home care” alone.
Compare funding as well as the service
Publicly funded care and private invoices are separate arrangements. Ontario's care options overview distinguishes funded services, co-payments, and privately paid options. For any proposed service, confirm who pays, which items are included, and whether supplies or related community services have separate charges.
Ask about funding before hiring or assuming reimbursement. The Family-Managed Home Care programme is one specific option for eligible groups, with assessment and administrative responsibilities. It is not a general promise that Ontario Health atHome will pay for any private provider you choose. Discuss eligibility and permitted arrangements with its coordinator.
Plan around confirmed support, not labels
If you are considering both funded and privately paid help, put the proposed visits on one calendar. Mark each as requested or confirmed. Add the tasks family members are willing and able to cover. This exposes gaps without assuming that either service will automatically change its hours to match the other.
- Which provider has agreed to each task, and at what time?
- Who handles clinical questions and changes to clinical instructions?
- Who should you contact about a delayed, missed, or changed visit?
- What information needs to be shared, with the person's agreement?
- Which costs and responsibilities belong to each arrangement?
Do not assume providers share records or coordinate automatically. Ask what communication is available and how relevant information should be passed on. Keep medical decisions with the appropriate care professionals and confirm responsibilities before relying on a plan.

For eligibility or publicly funded services, contact Ontario Health atHome directly. For a private non-clinical request in Hamilton or Vicaria Care's secondary service areas, speak with our concierge. Vicaria Care is a service of Vicaria Health Inc.; this comparison does not state a referral partnership or publicly funded contract.
Bring a task list and the existing schedule. Our home care cost guide helps compare quotes, and the guide to planning care hours helps organize the parts of the day that need attention.
Discuss the practical help you still need
Tell Vicaria Care which tasks and visits are already covered and where you would like non-clinical support. We can discuss availability and a clear private care quote.
You can also message us on WhatsApp or email info@vicaria.ca. A Vicaria Care account is not required for the first conversation.
